Jobs Deemed "Appropriate" for Women

Since the beginning of time, women have never been taken seriously. When women started being able to participate in journalism, it was in areas where "women belonged." To this day, it is rare to see women in powerful positions in the workplace, and it is not without effort. When it comes to the difference between men and women who work in journalism, women tend to have to put in double or even triple the amount of work as a man does, especially if they are a woman of color. Women of color in journalism especially face criticism for what they write based on their race and gender alone, regardless of their credentials. When it comes to how women are portrayed in the media, we are often underrepresented; And when we are
represented, whatever it may be for, we are often scrutinized for our appearance, and it is what is paid the most attention. Through social learning theory, we as a society have taken the way women were first represented and ran with it. We learn from observation, and if all we are observing in the media is that women are objects, then that is what it will continue to be. Sadly for there to be a difference, we have to pave a way for ourselves to be taken seriously. We are slowly seeing more women in areas traditionally reserved for “men,” such as sports broadcasting or leadership positions in any company, but it isn't without difficulty. Technology today has made it even easier to scrutinize women in journalism and attack them from the safety of their own homes behind a screen. The readings mentioned that some web pages require a first and last name to be able to comment, but with so many outlets, it's impossible to keep track. As women, it is up to us to watch our own backs and uplift each other to reach heights we think are unattainable, and it is by having women in media we can do this.
